Stepstay is an iPhone app that flips hotel search. Instead of sorting by price or stars, you pick what you want within walking distance — restaurants worth the walk, coffee that opens early, a gym, a grocery store, or the address of your meeting — and every hotel in the city gets a score from 0 to 100 for exactly that.

How the score works

A hotel's score is built from the categories you chose, inside the walk budget you set. Walk times follow real streets on the hotel page, so a river or a highway stops counting as walkable.

CoverageHow many places of each kind are actually in range — one good restaurant is not the same as twenty.

ProximityHow close the nearest few are, measured against the walk budget you picked rather than a fixed radius.

QualityGuest ratings. Set a rating bar and places below it stop padding the score. The hotel's own rating adjusts the final number.

Paste an invite or email and Stepstay pulls out the address and the dates, then searches around it.

See what is open near the hotel after you land, how far the airport is, and what is inside the hotel: gym, breakfast, restaurant, parking.

Tap anything nearby for hours, rating, photos, phone, menu and walking directions.

Filter to Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG and more, and book on the hotel's own site.

It learns how you travel

The score adapts to the places you actually choose. Only you see it, and you can turn it off or reset it at any time.

How booking works

Stepstay does not take bookings and does not resell rooms. When you choose a hotel, it hands you off to the place that room is actually sold — for a Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt or IHG property that is the brand's own booking page for your dates, so your stay earns points and counts toward status. Independent hotels link to a booking site instead.

There are no ads in the app, no sponsored placements, and no way for a hotel to pay to rank higher. A hotel's position comes from its score and nothing else.

Disclosure. Some booking links are affiliate links. If you book through one, the hotel or its booking partner may pay Stepstay a commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions never affect a hotel's score or its place in the results, and hotels that pay nothing are ranked exactly the same way.

Who it is for

Weekly business travelers: A different city every week, two or three nights at a time, booking direct and expensing it. The walk from the hotel to the meeting is the thing that decides the week.
Travelers without a car: Vacations where a rental car is the difference between relaxing and driving. If dinner, coffee and a park are a ten-minute walk away, you do not need one.
